Residents at Henley House in Ipswich have caught the sailing bug after spending the day on the River Orwell with local sailing charity, The Woolverstone Project.
The team at Henley House, which offers residential and dementia care, are firm believers that it’s never too late in life to try something new, and the home’s activity programme has a strong focus on being inclusive for all, as well as celebrating each resident’s individuality.
However, it can sometimes be challenging to find activities, especially more adventurous ones, that are fully accessible for residents with mobility requirements.
Laura Biggs, who works as an Activities Co-ordinator at the Greensleeves Care-operated home, came across The Woolverstone Project, which ‘provides sailing opportunities and tuition for those with disabilities’ and offers a fleet of fully wheelchair-accessible boats.
With no limits to what the residents could accomplish, the day was fully enjoyed by all.
Laura said:
“Everyone had such an amazing time with smiles all round. The whole day was perfect as it allowed residents who have mobility issues to be able to enjoy sailing and the day certainly brought back some happy memories of sailing.”
John, a resident at the home, said:
“The boat was wonderful. I really enjoyed the experience. I’ve never had the chance to sail a boat before.”
Whilst the sailing lesson was a new experience for some, for one resident, Jill, the trip brought back happy memories from earlier in her life:
“I used to go sailing with my husband. I never thought I would get an opportunity to go sailing again.”
The Henley House team have planned trips throughout August and September to make sure that all residents who want to attend are able to do so.
