The main types of dementia are:

Alzheimer’s disease – the most common form of dementia (around 60% of diagnoses). This type of dementia is more common in older people (65+) and is thought to be caused by high amounts of proteins in the brain that damage nerve cells and affect normal functioning of the brain.

Vascular dementia is the second most common form of dementia among older people (65+). It is caused by problems with blood circulation to the brain such as small blood clots, blocked arteries or burst blood vessels.

Frontotemporal dementia is the second most common form of dementia for under-65s, it is less common in older people. It is caused by the death of nerve cells and pathways in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain.
